摘要

This paper situates social implications of information systems (IS) within a broader context of progressive rationalisation in modern organisations. Specifically, we examine the roles ISs play in the rationalisation of organisational processes and its implications. We propose a rationality framework that synthesises different approaches to reason and rationality and which provides a conceptual model for critical analysis of social and organisational consequences of rationalisation in organisations enabled and supported by ISs. By drawing on a field study we interpret three IS cases to demonstrate how the rationality framework helps explain different IS-organisation relationships in light of increasing levels of rationality that entails both substantial benefits and considerable risks. Finally, in the paper's conclusion we explain the need for a rationality theory of IS that is based on theoretical argument and analysis of empirical data.
