The study deals with the development of a high speed machining unit, named shuttle unit, for straight microgrooves, which is attached to an ultraprecision machining center. The shuttle unit consists of air-supported shuttle, guide bar and base. It enables the rapid back-and-forth movement of three times a second. As a result, it is experimentally confirmed that the shuttle unit can considerably reduce the cutting time, keeping the same surface quality as an conventional cutting by an ultraprecision machining center.
