The number of applications of fluidized-bed drying have decreased in some fields (for example, in fine chemicals manufacturing) due to problems arising from product degradation and safety (risk of explosive atmospheres). Both problems can be overcome by operating at vacuum conditions. In this paper results are presented concerning the drying of two solids in a vacuum fluidized bed. After a brief discussion on hydrodynamics, experimental data on drying velocity are discussed. The influence of the diverse operating variables (gas velocity, absolute pressure, temperature) is analysed and conclusions are derived on the applicability of the process.
