Bulk films of aligned multiwalled nanotubes (MWNT) produced by both thermal CVD and plasma CVD have been investigated for their field emission properties. The turn-on and threshold fields are significantly lower for the thermal CVD films but the emission is less stable. Light emission is seen for high current densities that is related to ohmic heating of the tubes. This is more important for the thermal CVD samples. Individual MWNT have been studied using a combination of STM/TEM. Evidence for ohmic heating is again seen and the differences between the various investigated samples can be explained with a simple 1D heat equation model.
