Loess collapsibility is closely interconnected with its microstructure feature. The kinds of pores in loess can significantly influence on its properties. In terms of the scanning electron microscopy analysis, the pores in loess can be divided into four types based on their sizes. According to the shape of grain arrangement, it can be classified into open pore, embed pore, and inner-particle pore. The existence of open pore in loess is the fundamental reason for causing loess collapse. The effects of the pores on loess collapsibility are various with different diameters. The diameter of 20 μm can be taken as a distinguishing standard. The more contents of the pore larger than 20 μm exist, the higher the collapsibility is.
