The stability behavior of ground improved by floating-type SCP, which penetrates partially into clay ground, when subjected to backfill loading is analyzed and discussed, because the stability of the floating-type improved ground can be lower than that of the fixed type. Results of FEM analyses and centrifuge model tests were used to assess the effects of improvement depth on stability of improved ground. The results show that the failure pattern changes from bending to slip failure, when the improvement depth becomes lower than a critical value. Further, the stability of the floating-type is reduced if the improvement depth is lower than this critical depth.
