There has been a considerable body of knowledge accumulated over the past 30rnyears on the response of soils and granular materials to the application of repeated loading as experiencedrnin pavement and rail track foundations. Much of this knowledge has yet to be used in designrnpractice and empirical index tests such as California Bearing Ratio are still extensively used.rnMore fundamental concepts, which could be more widely used in engineering practice, are discussedrnand examples of how they could be incorporated in design are given. Recent research in thernUK is leading to the development of laboratory and field-testing procedures to be used in the contextrnof the move towards performance-based specifications and these are described.
