A diesel particulate filter using a pleated ceramic fiber filter media has been developed and tested. This filter is suitable for both light and heavy duty diesel engines. Diesel engine and vehicle test results indicate that the new DPF has advantages over current ceramic wall-flow DPF products. It exhibits approximately 1/5th the exhaust system backpressure and 1/3rd the weight or thermal mass, while achieving 95% particulate removal efficiency. The ceramic fiber filter is available in both round and rectangular configurations. Examples of the various filter geometries and sizes will be shown. Diesel engine test data showing the filtration efficiency, soot capacity vs backpressure increase, and thermal stability will be dis-cussed. The status of the volume production of the ceramic fiber DPF will also be addressed.
