As a consequence of the more severe environmental regulation, the European production of wastewater sludge will increase sharply in the future years. Traditional disposal routes will have difficulties to accept this rise. Thermal drying appears as an interesting process to complete and improve these routes. Thermal drying of sludge cake may be a complete treatment (before reuse or disposal) or a precursor to another treatment (incineration or gasification). Gaz de France carried out a state of the art of thermal drying as part of collaboration with ADEME and a French Water Agency (Seine Normandie). In a first step, a bibliographical study permitted to precise the French and European context (rules, disposal routes and their evolutions, existent drying technologies). Subsequently eight experimental evaluations of industrial working installations (in complement of five others made outside collaboration) permitted to control the bibliographical data.Our communication will show how the knowledge we have acquired and the tools we have developed through this work give Gaz de France the opportunity to help potential users (in particular industrial) in the choice of technologies and in the optimization of existing thermal drying installations.
