Fiber Reinforced Porous Alumina Substrate Consisting of Layer with Distinct Grain Sizes

The microstructure of the substrate for gas separation at high temperatures was designed and fabricated. The designed substrate is composed of three layers. The base layer was alumina reinforced with chopped-fibers of alumina which were unidirectionally oriented to increase the strain to failure. The intermediate layer and the top layer had graded pore size from the substrate through the membrane. The base layer was fabricated by the extrusion of powder and chopped-fiber of alumina. The strain to failure was improved from 1.27×10~(-3) with no fiber to 2.67×10~(-3) at the volume fraction of 70 %. The intermediate layer composed of thin three layers with a different pore size was formed on the substrate by slurry-dipping process. The three types of powders with a different particle size were used to control the pore size of each layer. The mean pore size of the substrate was graded from 0.55 μm to 0.16 μm.
