摘要

Various models and methods adopted for deriving gross hydropower potential of riversrnare discussed. Derivation of silt load of rivers from silt content of flows and silt dischargerninto seas is dealt with. The results of database thus created are tabulated and arncorrelation between the gross mean annual hydropower potential and silt load of aboutrnsixty rivers is presented as a second order polynomial. If river flows are checked, storedrnand gradually released after extracting their energy by hydropower plants, environmentrnwill be better conserved and protected, as otherwise the uncontrolled river flows withrntheir energy potential not extracted, cause degradation of environment by erosion, siltrngeneration, transport and deposition with increased flood damage in addition to thermalrnpollution by dissipation of undeveloped energy of water. The database and correlationrnwill be helpful in meeting both energy crisis and flood havoc. A few typical historicalrnexamples of devastation caused by silt load deposited by rivers are cited. Further workrnto be done is indicated.
