In this ppaper a project called "Virtual Companion" is presented. The project offers a method to help students in their learnign using educational hypermedia, which takes into account a students' cultural elvel and propensity for using multimedia packages. We have developed a prototype that can solve the lack of didactic efficacy of many multimedia products. We think our "Virtual Companion" can add new and unusual elements in the learning/teaching process and can reduce the feeling of isolation that can arise from teaching strategies based upon a personal relationship between student and computer.
