BTEX AND MTBE CONCENTRATIONS IN RESIDENTIAL INDOOR AIR AT INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX, KOREA

This study subjected benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene and MTBE in the indoor air. Target compounds sampling was conducted in city of siheung, residences adjacent to dyeing industrial complex and residences far from industrial complex. The amount of indoor air BTEX & MTBE [industrial complex sites(S1), reference sites(S2)] formed to benzene(9.82, 8.51μg/m3), toluene(103.80, 83.57 μg/m3), ethylbenzene(36.45, 15.52 μg/m3),xylene(26.27, 1.00 μg/m3) and MTBE(2.24, 2.47 μg/m3). Industrial complex sites indoor air concentrations measured in this study were generally higher than the reference sites. The most abundant single aromatic compound in the indoor and outdoor exposure sample was toluene and the maximum GM levels 103.80 μg/m3 and 105.60 μg/m3 in indoor and outdoor air, respectively. In this study presents the GM indoor BTEX and MTBE concentrations in the smoking households versus the nonsmoking households. Four of the target VOCs in S1 and S2 had not significantly higher indoor concentrations in the smoking households than in the nonsmoking households.
