Rice, Oryza Sativa L., is the staple food for more than three billion people or over half the world's population. Hybrid rice technology has contri buted significantly toward food security, environmental protection, and employment opportunities in China. Since the mid - 1990s, this technology has also been developed and introduced to farmers in India, Vietnam, the Philippines, Bangladesh, and the United States. Use of molecular marker technology has greatly assisted in the development of hybrid rice technology. In this paper the authors reviewed recent advances, achieved mainly in China, in the use of molecular mar kers in hybrid rice research, development and extension.
