One of the fundamental concerns of information science is the notion of relevance and its measurement. This paper examines some of the standard approaches to relevance, assesses the post-modernist philosophy and its impact on information science and relevance, and suggests alternative orientations in social epistemology in the work of Heidegger and Schutz.
