Military systems of systems are of increasing interest due to recent trends in joint service andrncoalition force operations. Such systems have a number of challenges in their design, acquisition and operation. The component platforms and systems must integrate and be interoperable to achieve a desired mission capability. They typically must also be capable of independent operations. Each of the component systems is a complex mix of hardware, software, and human operators and decision makers. Acquisition practices differ across the military services and the international community for the military systems of systems. Differences in engineering practices as well as policies and operational doctrine create serious obstacles to interoperability. These are compounded by language and cultural differences. The international panel members will present their approaches to the engineering and acquisition of military systems of systems, and the challenges to achieving interoperability across services and nations. In this context, they will discuss supportive methods and tools including simulation based acquisition and integrated digital environments.
