High temperature structural Nb-Ti-Si based alloys contain alloying additions of Ge, Cr, Al and Hf. Some of these form oxides that are more thermodynamically stable than silica and consequently, complex oxides form during oxidation of these alloys. Mutual solubility among oxides, multiphase coexistence and segregation of the elements during oxidation lead to a very complex elemental distribution in oxidized samples. This paper provides examples of qualitative and quantitative identification of the microchemistry of phases in such situations using elemental mapping in the SEM employing EDS and WDS.
