Using piezoelectric materials to harvest energy from ambient vibration has been of great interest over the past few years. Because the power output of the piezoelectric materials is relatively low, rechargeable battery is considered as one kind of energy storage to accumulate the harvested energy for intermittent use. In order to optimize the harvesting efficiency, Ottman et al. applied a DC-DC converter in the battery-based piezoelectric energy harvesting circuit. Their energy harvesting scheme has shown considerable improvement in the harvesting efficiency. However, in their analysis, the converter was assumed as a 100% efficiency subsystem while the energy losses of the internal components were not considered. In this paper, we develop a converting theory based on the basic components of the converter. Efficiency of the converter is analyzed and discussed. Simulation results show that the converter efficiency is related to several parameters including the duty cycle of the control voltage and the voltage of the rechargeable battery. The harvested power could be improved by increasing the battery voltage if various rechargeable batteries are available.
