Education on the Net: Constructing Collaborative Learning Communities

The expansive growth of the Internet provides new avenues for enhancing the teaching and learning process. Compared to what has been done in the higher education area in effectively using the Internet, exploration of the possibilities in the K-12 arena are just beginning. We have been working with several U.S. schools, districts, and state education departments as part of IBM's Reinventing Education initiative. Several common themes have emerged as areas that K-12 educators are struggling with: forming meaningful connections for communicating information between teachers and parents; supporting teachers in their teaching and professional development through collaborative tools; and providing the means for all teachers, students, parents, and community mentors to publish and share information. In this paper, we describe a K-12 Internet applications framework that addresses the issues of communication, collaboration, and publication. The applications within the framework are designed to promote a dynamic team learning environment. We discuss the components of the framework, and how to customize the application suite to suit the needs of a particular school or connected learning community.
