Multimedia-Web Hybrid Learning Environments in Science and Technology Education

Enhanced developments in information and communications technologies, the growth of human knowledge, and the far-reaching changes in the world of work, are leading to changes in the teaching and learning of science and technology in schools (DeHeart, 1994). One of the driving forces of this change is the information technology and communication networks that have been incorporated into the learning culture of schools (salomon & Perkins, 1996). In this paper we present MOST - a new multimedia-web hybrid learning environment developed as part of the new Israeli science and technology curriculum for junior high school. MOST - kinds-On Science and Technology" comprises of five multimedia modules on: Space and Universe; Hydrosphere and Atmosphere; Communication in the Living World; Man Body and Behavior; and Reproduction, Growth and Development. These environments were developed by the Center of Educational Technology (CET) in Israel, with a cooperation of the Science and Technology Education Center at Tel- Aviv University. The purpose of the paper presented here is to present and demonstrate the potential of integrating new information technologies in the science and technology curriculum.
