Teaching multimedia is a challenge to most faculty because we are aimed at a moving target - the technology. At the present time, almost every 6 month there are new software versions being announced, new computer hardware being introduced. If your class is the only one class your students will take to learn about multimedia, what would you do? How would you take them through the entire journey of multimedia design and production in 12 weeks or less? If most of your students have computers at home, they are eager to spend their own money to do multimedia production at home, what multimedia authoring system would you suggest? Most importantly, what happen if your university have limited budget that they can not afford to buy high end multimedia program for each student to use in the lab, what would you do? The author is proposing a user-friendly model to teach multimedia design and production in a cost and effective way. This model is based my analysis of sixteen multimedia course syllabus from eight universities in the United States and Canada published by Media Design and Production Division at AECT (Association for Educational Communication and Technology) published in 1998 and my ten years experience of teaching multimedia in the university level. The author will demonstrate student projects written in various authoring systems. The authoring systems include: director, HyperStudio and HyperCard. Pre-production programs will include Adobe PhotoShop, Premiere, SoundEdit 16 and various multimedia CDs. This is an interactive session. Participants will be invited to share their experiences. If you are involved in teaching multimedia, this is a must-see session.
