摘要

The prevailing business scenario and drivers of competition are briefly overviewed. The relevance and importance of Lean Manufacturing is discussed in the context, wherein satisfying customer demand of very small lot sizes and wide variety through quick response, quality improvement and lower cost, have become key to success. Significance of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in industrial and economic development is highlighted in today's market pressures where, they are to compete with large and multinational enterprises with meager financial, technological and knowledge resources. SMEs will be required to move towards e-manufacturing, a little later if not now, to survive and grow, and such a transition may be smoother if their internal processes are streamlined and lean. The paper discusses a few propositions for need identification, nature and extent of assistance, mechanism of assistance etc. for such transformation.
