摘要

The constant search by the tourism industry for new attractions allied with increasing interest in visiting battlefields has created a new, if somewhat minor, tourism phenomenon centred around battlefield tourism. Nested within the larger grouping of touristic experiences described by the term Dark Tourism, battlefield tourism has emerged as a growing form of tourist activity that has expanded beyond the parameters of former battlefields and museums to include new experiences such as re-enactments and alternative histories and the addition of sites that have an association with military activity. The ultimate paradox of the battlefield is the freedom of the tourist to visit a once dangerous place where the agony of combat has been replaced by the tranquillity of peace. Where combatants once fell visitors now reflect, question, experience sadness or even express gladness. This paper draws on some of these themes to examine one small aspect of battlefield tourism, the military site that while designed for war, never became a battlefield and today houses a military museum that encourages reflection on a nation's military past.
