摘要

Restoration or protection of wetlands and riparian buffers is a major component of water quality protection efforts in the Tennessee River watershed. Selection of native plant species that are adapted to a specific region and site conditions is critical to the success of these efforts. In 1994, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) developed a framevwork to: (i) compile a database of native plants that can be used to restore or enhance aquatic, wetland, and riparian habitats, and (ii) design an expert system to assist in the selection of plants for specific locations, site conditions, and water-quality objectives. In 1997, TVA published a PC-based guide entitled, Banks & Buffers - A guide to selecting native plants for streambanks and shorelines. The guide contains selected characteristics and environmental tolerances of 117 native plants, over 400 color photographs illustrating habitat and growth form, and a regional listing of more than 400 wholesale and state forestry nurseries.
