摘要

Wood-chip barriers are barriers constructed of peat, wood chips and subsurface drains which serve as an efficient and inexpensive means of levelling out peak loads of suspended solids in the runoff water from peat production areas nearing the end of their economic life, when an excavator is used to concentrate the peat in certain strips. The research reported on here was carried out on the mire of Viidansuo in northern Finland in the summers of 2002 and 2003. Comparison of a peat production area provided with a wood-chip barrier and one without such a barrier showed that reductions of about 40% in both mean discharge and the peak discharge rates were achieved in the former. The reductions in discharge were achieved partly as a consequence of increased evaporation, which also meant that concentrations of substances affecting water quality were higher than in the runoff water from areas without a wood-chip barrier. Solid matter loading in the areas with excavated plots was on average only a fifth of that in a traditional peat production area, and nitrogen and phosphorus loads were also markedly lower. Although the water samples were taken from above the sedimentation basin in both of the sectors where the peat had been concentrated, loading was in general less than the average for mires with a sedimentation basin as reported by the Northern Ostrobothnia Environment Centre. The results also suggest that the areas from which the peat has been removed function as evaporation basins, substantially reducing the volume of runoff water and thereby the extent of loading of the waterways downstream of the peat production area. On the other hand, the wood-chip barriers do not appear to have any pronounced effect in restraining the passage of dissolved substances into these waterways.
