The tanker Braer grounded at Garths Ness near the southernmost point of the Shetland Islands on 5 January 1993, under appalling weather conditions. It released 85,000 tonnes of Norwegian Gullfaks crude oil, a biodegraded, light crude oil, into the sea over the following 7 days. On 8 January 1993, an Exclusion ZOne was designated within which harvesting was prohibited to prevent contaminated fish, shellfish and farmed salmon reaching the market.
