This paper illustrates the analytical method of predicting the yield capacity of steel I-section subjected to axial and biaxial bending loads. The analytical method precludes the use of the standard flexure and the interaction formula for biaxial bending. The steel stress diagram is applied to the I-section from which forces and bending moments are calculated. These values are then plotted to yield the capacity curve of the steel I-section. Variables considered are the width b and depth d of the rectangular tubing, thickness of the shell, steel yield stress f_y and position of the capacity axis. The diagonal of the outer rectangle enclosing the I-section is chosen for generating the capacity curve. Microsoft Excel worksheet is used to plot the yield capacity curve of any steel I-section. An example yield capacity curve for a steel I-section is shown as proof that the analytical method is feasible.
