The quality of emulsion-grade bitumen is usually evaluated on the basis of the properties of the corresponding emulsion. The sessile drop tensiometer has proven to be quite useful for studying the interfacial phenomena of bitumen/acidic water systems. With this technique, it has been shown that polar species in the bitumen migrate to the interface ; this could lead to surface structuring. As the adsorption of emulsifier at the interface bitumen/aqueous emulsifier solution induces a decrease in interfacial tension, this measurement technique also enables us to evaluate the effectiveness of various emulsifiers for a given bitumen, in relation to the quantity of emulsifier adsorbed on bitumen particles in the emulsion. Different behaviours in terms of bitumen/emulsifier interactions according to bitumen nature have been outlined too.
