摘要

In computer science, ontology refers to a specific vocabulary used to formally representing shared understanding of information/knowledge in a given domain. It is now applied to many areas including knowledge management, database design, semantic Web, and information retrieval, etc., providing a formal conceptualization of a specific application domain and helping people share the same domain communicate knowledge with each other concisely. In this paper, an overview of ontology definitions, construction methods and principles, techniques and tools used for information retrieval is addressed. Afterward, an ontology-based Chinese information retrieval system is designed as the start of the pilot study for Chinese information retrieval. The contributions of this paper are twofold: presenting related research works on ontologies and suggesting the ways to developing the ontology construction system for Chinese information retrieval.
