Patterning of Self-Oriented Nanocrystals in an Amorphous Alloy under Focused Ion Beam Irradiation

Orientated nanocrystals (NCs) and selective amorphousization of NCs are essential for improving the function of nanocrystalline materials. In our previous studies, oriented nickel NCs have been successfully formed by focused ion beam (FIB) irradiation of a Ni-P amorphous alloy. These studies have revealed that changing the irradiation angle enables precipitation control of oriented NCs. Formation of NCs has usually been completed from a direction parallel to the surface plane of the Ni-P amorphous alloy (0-degrees irradiation). In contrast, FIB irradiation from a direction normal to the surface plane of the Ni-P amorphous alloy has not formed NCs (90-degrees irradiation). These results suggest that NCs can be erased by changing the angle of FIB irradiation. In this investigation, patterning of oriented NCs in a Ni-P amorphous alloy has been attempted by changing the FIB irradiation angle. As a result of transmission electron micrograph (TEM) observation, both nanocrystalline phase and amorphous phase changes due to irradiation angle were observed. This indicates that NCs were erased by 90-degrees irradiation. This result suggests that FIB irradiation is promising for nano-meter scale patterning of NCs.
