This paper concerns investigation of causes of the failure of structural components of small civil aircraft, inclusive of ultra-light aircraft and gliders. Case studies were selected such that they cover, as far as possible, most frequent causes of failure of aircraft and their components, in other words design errors, fabrication imperfection, unanticipated service conditions and inadequate maintenance, as well as most frequent failure mechanisms, i.e. fatigue and overloading. The aim is to point out not only the causes of failures, which frequently result in great material losses and loss of life, but also ways of forestalling them.
