Among non linear effects affecting electrical power plant rotating machinery the phenomenon of the so called unbalanced magnetic pull (UMP) is probably the most common. UMP occurs in the generators due to the not uniform radial distribution of the air gap. In practice, even if generator rotor and stator have been carefully aligned, the effect of the weight, the fact that the generator operates over its first critical speed and the inevitable dynamic unbalanced forces determine a radial distribution of the air gap that is not uniform and this causes a net electromagnetic radial force. This paper introduces a non linear model for the calculation of the UMP in synchronous electric machines and presents an application to a turbo-generator of 900MW with a four poles generator.
