Tyre manufactures have to find the optimum performance in the magic triangle of tyre properties. 1. Abrasion 2. Rolling resistance 3. Wet grip The trend is to produce tyres with better performance regarding safety and economy. The paper describes the needs and significant new developments in this area. Tyre life is affected by several factors. The impact of the polymer on abrasion of the tread as well as the influence of the rubber for innerliner to keep the right inflation of the tyre will be described. Over the last ten years the low rolling resistance and grip performance of original equipment tyres has continued to improve to meet the more stringent targets of the vehicle manufacturers. This improvement has only been possible by continual development of tread polymers. This paper describes the development of standard and modified grades and shows comparisons of results that have been achieved in the laboratory. Additionally the tire industry is demanding non-marking mineral oils, while this topic has first been discussed in Europe, tire manufacturers are now investigating this issue globally. This presentation will also discuss the different alternative oils and the differences they cause in the tread performance.
