As a reinforcing material of a pneumatic radial tire, conventionally, a steel cord formed by twisting a plurality of steel filaments subjected to brass plating has been widely used. There has recently been a demand for reduction in weight of steel cord required for each tire in order to achieve lightening of tire from the standpoint of resources/energy saving or environment protection, without a risk of tire performances and with an economic construction of steel cords. For a few decades, the art of steel cords has known a continuous trend towards simpler construction comprising fewer and thicker filaments which require fewer manufacturing steps and provide a full rubber penetration.
