UDEC modeling of constant normal stiffness direct shear tests

Direct shear tests have not been widely used to test rock masses, yet they may be a better representation of the conditions a rock mass is subjected to in the field and may also provide data on the behavior of rock masses under load that may not be obtained using other methods. However, the process of fabricating shear testing equipment and rock mass samples is both expensive and difficult. It may be more expedient to model direct shear tests using numerical techniques. The model would need to be developed and verified against experimental data. However, once this is done, it could be used to investigate failure mechanisms and to carry out parametric studies on rock masses at relatively minimal expense and time. Laboratory direct shear tests have been carried out under constant normal stiffness (CNS) conditions on relatively large-scale, jointed, soft rock masses at Monash University. The behavior of the samples during the tests, both physically and visually, has been recorded. Three typical pre-peak and failure mechanisms were observed during testing. The direct shear tests have been modeled using the two-dimensional distinct element code, UDEC, to investigate if the numerical model can replicate these same mechanisms. FISH routines have been incorporated into the UDEC model to measure stresses and deformations and to apply CNS conditions. A movie of rock mass behavior during the test has also been generated. This paper describes the UDEC model and compares the behavior of the laboratory rock mass samples with the UDEC simulations.
