The miniaturized machine tool (mMT) is efficient for machining small and accurate components with its advantages such as saving energy and spacing, less inertial effect, and less heat dissipation. Geometric errors of the system exist due to misalignment and assembly etc, though the size of the mMT system is small. To measure 21 geometric errors, a novel multi-degree-of-freedom measuring system is proposed for the miniaturized machining tool. This system consists of five capacitance sensors. An exact mathematical model based on the Homogeneous Transformation Matrix (HTM), incorporated with these geometric error components is obtained to define the changes in outputs of capacitance sensors. An algorithm is derived from this model to calculate each error component by using the changes in outputs of probes. To verify the efficiency of this algorithm, several computer simulations are carried out. In the sensitivity analysis of this algorithm, the effects of the errors in probe mounting and fixture-dependent are also discussed. The present analysis shows that this algorithm is efficient in measuring, particularly the angular errors. Finally the proposed algorithms are evaluated and the results are presented in this paper.
