摘要

This paper describes a framework for a software system that can be used to search and retrieve names from a database containing Arabic personal names written in roman alphabets. The design utilizes the particular characteristics of the Arabic letters and their respective sounds. The proposed system utilizes a series of mapping schemes as well as special set of rules to transform a Romanized Arabic name (whether a surname or a first name) into its sound-equivalent Arabic name that is written in Arabic alphabets. The system then compares the converted names to the name in query, which will also be transformed to Arabic, using a proposed distance measure and a set of heuristics.
