During respiratory cycles, respiratory epithelium is repeatedly exposed to airborne particles and microorganisms from the external environment. Innate defenses and the adaptive immune system protect the lung from microorganisms, in part mediated by the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (e.g. interleukin 6 or IL-6). These molecules play pivotal roles in inflammatory remodeling and pathogenesis of lung diseases. The magnitude of inflammatory response is precisely regulated by pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Exuberant inflammation can cause severe consequences and lead to pathogenesis of acute and chronic pulmonary disorders, including lung cancer. Lung cancer continues to be one of the biggest public health challenges facing the world. More than 173,000 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and more than 600,000 new cases will be diagnosed in China each year. It will continue to be the most common cause of cancer death among men and women.
