Energy Storage Challenges for Heavy-Duty Applications

While there is a desire for Caterpillar to leverage automotive designs of energy storage systems for the present and upcoming automotive hybrid and all-electric vehicle designs, product-leveraging challenges exist primarily in the area of shock & vibration capability and temperature requirements. Reduction in development costs for the wide range of energy storage devices, that would likely be required for a full heavy-duty hybrid product line, would benefit from methodologies that reduce or even eliminate the need to long and expensive life cycle testing. And, overall, energy storage industry efforts in reduction of cost and improvements in cycle life will provide the greatest improvement in hybrid machine business models for our heavy-duty applications.
