SPACEHAB, SpaceTec and Micro Craft have formed an alliance to supply commercial attached payload services to NASA, other government agencies, and a wide commercial customer-base. The alliance will develop, own, and operate a family of experiment carriers and will provide complete experiment analytical and physical integration. The alliance will begin by offering low-cost opportunities to fly attached payloads in the Shuttle payload bay and on the top of the SPACEHAB module roof.rnThe principle element of the program will be the Attached Payload Facility (APF), a privately financed experiment carrier facility for the International Space Station (ISS). The APF has been designed to host a variety of payload users and has many unique rncharacteristics not available through any other carrier. The APF will be available for launch by ISS Utilization Flight 4 in January 2002.rnThis paper discusses the design features of the family of commercial facilities, the payload integration template, and the issue of access to space and how the design and compatibility of the APF to other ISS carriers can provide more flight opportunities for the user community.
