Fatigue behavior in the VHCF regime is dominated by microstructurally induced stress raisersrninitiated by local heterogeneities and due to the inherent nature of VHCF, the effective damagernmechanism need not be inferred readily from LCF and HCF behavior of materials. Hence, therninfluence of microscopic and macroscopic notch effects on the VHCF behavior was analyzedrnsystematically for a precipitation-hardened Al-alloy in different heat-treatment conditions,rnrepresenting the different zones of a welded joint. In addition, welded joints with trimmed surfacesrnwere tested by means of the ultrasonic fatigue testing technique, where the sinusoidalrndistribution of the load amplitude along the longitudinal load axis permits a selective testing ofrnthe different weld zones. Results for the notched samples and welded samples representing thernheat-affected zone (HAZ) indicated a clear microstructural influence while welding defects in thernweld seam led to a drastic decline of fatigue life and a pronounced scattering of the results.
