The assessment of new technology strategies in multidivisional firms, and the role of the chief executive officer as the strategic decision maker regarding these new technology issues are examined. The rate of technological change has made the strategic management of technology a critical issue for US firms competing in technology-driven markets. It is suggested that a science advisory committee (SAC) made up of independent senior scientists can assess the firm's performance of the strategic management of new product technology. The research reported explores the advantages of such a committee in implementing the technology evaluation process in multidivisional firms.
