STUDIES ON WIDE ROW PLANTING TECHNOLOGY OF SUGARCANE FOR MECHANICAL HARVEST

Acute labour shortage is felt during sugarcane harvesting season in the country. Therefore mechanization of sugarcane harvest would substantially reduce the labour requirement and help in timely harvest of required quantities of cane for milling. Wide row spacing (150 cm) of sugarcane crop is a pre-requisite for mechanical harvest with the presently available machines. Experiments at Coimbatore have shown that to sustain cane and sugar yields at wide rows on par with the conventional 90 cm rows, growing high tillering varieties (Co 6304, Co 8021, Co 86032, CoC 85061) and Supply of highere seed and fertilizer rates per unit row length (i.e. uniform rates per unit area) are required. A 'dual row' planting pattern was found useful to sustain/improve yields under wide rows.
