The growth in the number of Programmers has been spectacular; from an estimated 6,000 in 1954 and an estimate of 50,000 in 1963 (Ref. 1), it has increased to a present population of 120,000-150,000 Programmers and some 50,000 Systems Analysts. This number is expected to jump to 400,000 Programmers and Systems Analysts by 1970 (Ref. 2). It is obvious then, that the problem of attracting, selecting, and hiring for this future growth in the computer industry will become more critical each year. As a step in planning further research in this field, information on current selection criteria has been obtained by use of a survey sent to computer installation managers in both the United States and Canada, the results of which make up this report.
