This paper discuses the three-dimensional stress analysis method of concrete slab design on an elastic foundation. Because the interface between an existing concrete pavement and the overlay is neither bonded nor unbonded, the sandwich element of the Goodman model has been adopted. The threedimensional finite element program developed according to this theory can be used for analyzing many kinds of pavement and load conditions. This paper compares load stresses, joint-solving method and economic bendfits of a concrete overlay with either matched or mismatch joints. The paper further demonstrated the convenience of construction, and economic benefit of the latter. A design graph has been developed, and can be readily applied.
