A simple mobile robot platform has been developed that is propelled by energy liberated from baby-food carrots. This robot was specifically built as a demonstration device for use in middle or high schools to stimulate interest in science and technology. The vehicle represents a crude example of a Gastrobot, or robot that is powered entirely through the digestion of real food. Curret state-of-the-art Gastrobots use hazardous bacteria to efficiently convert food carbohydrates directly to electricity, so clearly a safer alternate approach was requried for use in a school environment. The final prototype used yeast rather than a pathogenic bacteria, and exploited the gas pressure of carbon dioxide liberated in a simple fermentation reaction, rather than any complex electricity generation. Such Gastrobots can be used by school children to experiment with various yeast strains and different food diets, by obsrving how far/fast the robot will travel in each case. A competitive edge can also be introduced by running Gastrobot races.
