That the CO_2 concentration can noticeably affect planetary temperatures is clear from many lines of evidence Laboratory experiments on CO_2 absorption; Theoretical understanding of how multi-atom gases and infrared radiation interact; The geological history of the Earth; The comparative surface ; temperatures and atmospheric compositions of Venus, Mars, and the Earth; Climate model simulations of past changes in the global average climate-from distant past to recent centuries To explain these many lines of evidence, the climate sensitivity, defined as the equilibrium (long-term) increase in global average surface temperature that would result from doubling the atmospheric CO_2 concentration, must be in range 2 to 4.5°C (3 to 8°F) .
