Pullout experiments of a single carbon nanotube were performed at the nanometerscale within a home-made scanning electron microscope (SEM) which included thefunction of atomic force microscopy, to measure the interfacial adhesion betweenmulti-walled carbon nanotubes and a thermoplastic polymer matrix of poly ether etherketone (PEEK). The interfacial strength between the multi walled carbon nanotubesand the matrix was found to be 19 MPa. Nano tensile tests were also performed withina transmission electron microscope (TEM) to observe the deformation process of theinterface region of composites containing carbon nanotubes. The slippage between theshells of multi-wall nanotubes was observed. This will limit the load transfer frompolymer matrix to each wall of MWNTs.
