Effects of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi on the Growth,Nutrient Uptake and Chlorophyll Concentration of Citrus aurantium Seedlings

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi have been shown to increase plant growth. The effects of two AM fungi, Glomus intraradices and Glomus mosseae, on mineral nutrition, chlorophyll concentration and growth of Citrus aurantium seedlings were analysed. Plants were harvested and processed four months after inoculation. Growth was examined by measuring plant height and diameter, leaf number and shoot and root fresh and dry weights. Sour orange plants inoculated with the AM fungi had significantly higher fresh and dry weights-of shoots, leaves and roots-compared with the non-inoculated plants. Also, the number of leaves and the length and diameter of shoots were significantly greater in the inoculated plants, suggesting that AM fungi accelerated plant growth. In addition, mycorrhiza formation increased the chlorophyll concentration. Mycorrhizal inoculation also significantly decreased tissue concentrations of Ca, Na, K, N and Mg but improved plant phosphorus acquisition relative to non-inoculated plants. However, Fe concentrations were not significantly affected by the AM fungi. Significant differences were not observed between G. intraradices and G. mosseae except for leaf fresh weight and number, P concentration and root colonisation percentage. The results indicate that inoculation with AM fungi could be a useful approach to increase sour orange growth. These fungi could be used as biofertilisers in order to cultivate citrus seedlings in organic agriculture.
