Plant Growth Regulators and Fertilizer Solutions Influence Emergence of Citrus Rootstocks

Citrus rootstocks are usually propagated by seeds. Pre-germination amendment of seeds with substances like gibberellins, auxins or fertilizers may increase emergence, thus improving rootstock production efficiency. This work was divided into two trials. In the first trail, one-year-old refrigerated seeds of Sunki (Citrus sunki Hort. ex Tanaka) and Cleopatra (Citrus reshni Hort. ex Tanaka) mandarins were soaked in water and fertilizer solutions (ordinary superphosphate, monoammonium phosphate and aminoacids solution with calcium, at 1 000mg/L) prior to sowing in leaching tubes filled with coconut coir. In the second trial, Rangpur lime (Citrus limonia Osbeck) seeds were treated with gibberellic acid (GA3) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) at 0, 100, 500 and 1000mg/L prior to sowing. Cleopatra mandarin had higher percentage of emergence than Sunki mandarin in 28 days after sowing. The use of all fertilizer solutions increased and accelerated emergence of Sunki mandarin only. The use of IAA did not result in faster emergence of Rangpur lime, even though IAA at 1 000mg/L led to higher emergence than water, 49 days after sowing. Rangpur lime emergence was accelerated by GA3 at 1 000mg/L. Nevertheless, seedlings produced from seeds submitted to GA3 at 500 and 1 000mg/L were markedly etiolated, which may affect liner performance after transplant. Further studies on the use of plant growth regulators and fertilizer solutions to improve citrus rootstocks emergence are necessary for validating commercial practices.
